Poor Romney . . . with friends like this

Romney is all set to clinch the GOP presidential nomination tonight, as soon as the Texas primary voting polls close.

So what does he have to contend with?   Donald Trump -- with whom Romney is appearing at a fund-raiser tonight in Las Vegas -- is making the headlines doubling down on his birther conspiracy theory.

That's right.   Instead of playing second fiddle to the newly anointed candidate, while using his celebrity to raise money, The Donald is grabbing the headlines, speaking to reporters on the phone, appearing on national television interviews, claiming that Obama was really born in Kenya.

And all the Romney campaign has been able to offer in defense is that Romney himself believes Obama is a natural born citizen and that he can't control what all his supporters say.

All I can say is, if that's what Romney wants, he is welcome to him.   May he have many more such friends.

  1. Ach, der Liebe !! What irony. No wonder Romney doesn't want to be drawn into Donald Trump's obsession with Obama's birth certificate.

It seems that when George Romney, Mitt's father, was running for president in 1968, a similar question arose about whether he was a "natural born citizen." In fact, it is well-known that he was born in Mexico, where his parents were living with a Mormon community. Both of his parents were U.S. citizens, however, so he claimed that made him a natural born citizen, even though he was born outside the U.S.

And there was a similar question about McCain in 2008, though it wasn't really credible. But McCain was actually also born outside the geographical U.S. -- but at a U.S. Naval Air Base in Panama where his military father was stationed. So it can be argue that he was born in "U. S. territory." And that was accepted.

So -- this has nothing actually to do with Obama's place of birth. But it does show that there are gray areas in this law of eligibility.

The simple fact is that both George Romney and John McCain were born outside the geographical United States, while Barack Obama was born inside the geographical U. S.

So let's be done with this silliness.
