The Kentucky legislature has passed a resolution declaring any form of discrimination to be inconsistent with American values.
Introduced by KY's only black state senator, Democrat Gerald Neal, it was an obvious response to Rand Paul's comments about the Civil Rights Act. Neal declared that Paul's remark had been "extreme" and had made a laughing stock of Kentucky.
It was adopted without objection from a mostly Republican legislature.
No, it won't change anyone's mind or likely anyone's vote. But it can be pointed to as an official repudiation of Paul's paleolibertarianism.

We shouldn't read too much into what this signifies. I went to the KY Legislature website to check it out:
ReplyDeleteIt was Senate Resolution #31 among 45 resolutions passed on voice vote without discussion. Most of them were to honor some local individual, or welcomed a new corporation to the state, or recognized the ROTC at a local high school.
Still, the language is significant for PR purposes: "Affirm protections of the 14th Amendment of the Constitution of the United States requiring equal protection of the law, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and the Kentucky Civil Rights Act of 1966 which protect the citizens of the Commonwealth from discrimination."
Scientists claim that a headless cockroach can only be expected to survive for 10 days.
ReplyDeleteKentucky may have found the exception to the rule in Rand Paul!
This short satire is my video response to the good doctor:

Thanks for the video. Great closing quip: "So, is Rand Paul a racist or an idiot?" Answer from buddy: "Aren't they the same thing?"
