Big DNC concession to Sanders and his supporters

The Democratic National Committee has made a major concession to Senator Bernie Sanders concerning writing of the party platform.   Ordinarily, the DNC chair, which would be Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, appoints all 15 members of the Platform Committee that will meet prior to the convention to draft the party's agenda and policy principles.

It was just announced yesterday that Sanders will get to select five members of the 15 member committee.   Hillary Clinton will select six and Wasserman-Schultz four.  Among those expected to be chosen by Sanders are environmental activist Bill McKibbon; Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) who is chair of the House Progressive Caucus and a Muslim;  and James Zogby, a pro-Palestine activist.

People have been asking what does Sanders want, why is he staying in the race?    This is the kind of influence in bringing change that he wants.   They should also give him one of the most important speaking times at the convention.  It's a smart move on the DNC's  part, finally to recognize the strength of his progressive movement within the party and what he has accomplished in this election.   He's earned it -- and his supporters have too.   Expect him to return to the Senate now in a far more powerful position than he has had before.  It is a remarkable achievement.
